twofacedcharade: (Default)
Character Name: Charade (Goes by 'Char')

Age:
18 (?!?!?!?)

Hometown:
Nova City (officially), seventh circle of hell (unofficially)

Specialties: Street smarts, determination, an absurdly high intelligence stat with absolutely no desire to utilize it for anything productive, an almost encyclopedic vocabulary of profanity, and the willingness to commit acts of violence at a moment's notice. They can also utilize a limited form of psychokinesis, but for some reason it only seems to work on knives.

Weaknesses: See 'specialties'. Also, they possess no brain-to-mouth filter.

Appearance: Charade is a slender human, with pale skin that is prone to exhibiting a red blush at the slightest emotional provocation or physical exertion. They have red eyes and hair that is naturally red but is also dyed a deeper shade of red, like a mahogany color. True to their name, they can slide in and out of any style of clothing they choose, though their favorite thing to wear is jeans and either a green striped sweater or a black tank top. Similarly, they don't conform to any ideas regarding gendered clothing, and switch back and forth between 'masculine' and 'feminine' looks depending on whatever their whim on a particular day. They have heavy scarring on their back, as well as elsewhere. For the sake of the person playing against Charade at any given time, those scars won't specifically be mentioned unless both players are okay with the context.

Story: They are, when it comes down to it, a blank slate. Their earliest memory is waking up on the streets of Nova City in the crumbling remains of a burning building with absolutely no recollection of what happened beforehand. Despite these recollective shortcomings, they quickly discovered a preternatural talent for survival through any means possible, most of which involving one or more of the traditional seven deadly sins (wrath and lust are particular favorites). When something gets them particularly emotionally riled, the space around them seems to get hotter...for reasons no one, not even Charade themself, can quite explain.

jinnim: (Default)
Character Name: Jinnim
Age: Unspeakably old
Hometown: Mesporte, Urdania
Appearance: click me!

Story:
Specialties: Jinnim is a dragon that, when threatened, can and will unhinge his jaw to spew fire at whatever opponent crosses his path. He also has strength, size, and flight on his side. He's not prone to fighting unnecessarily, but instead is charismatic and outgoing, preferring to resolve matters with his words. He will protect people in danger if he comes across them. He's also a jack-of-all-trades type, skilled in a little bit of everything.

Weaknesses: As is typical of most dragons who breathe fire, Jinnim is weak to ice and, most especially, water. Being drenched in it completely voids his ability to breathe fire all together. He's prone to drinking more than he should and reminiscing about lovers lost. Jinnim is terrible at using weapons. Regardless of who teaches him or how hard he tries, he never gets better at it. He also struggles with understanding anything electronic. He's a fish out of water in Terranova.

Story: Early in life, as a brash, ignoble dragon, Jinnim crossed the wrong person and was cursed to be incapable of dying due to old age or illness. He's mortal, still capable of falling due to combat and poisons. He's often wandering Urdania in search of his next great love affair. He wants a family, someone to love and be loved by, and that doesn't necessarily mean romance. When you have a life that doesn't quit, time becomes meaningless, and it's not uncommon for him to live a few decades near a close friend until they pass or fall out of friendship with him.

He has a home in Mesporte that he only occasionally visits. He's a treasure hunter, often searching for Terra Antiquan artifacts to sell to the highest bidder. When he's on the road, he's traveling through all of Urdania in search of anything worth its weight in currency. He doesn't subscribe to the lack of religious belief in Mesporte because he originates from Erding. He tends toward worship of the spirits or nature itself.

Jinnim often lingers in bars, hoping to make new friends. He buys drinks for anyone interesting and scoots in next to them in an attempt to garner their story. Not long after meeting Jinnim, it becomes obvious that he's very well-lived and has his thumb in everyone's pie. He has a skill set that rivals even the notorious jack-of-all-trades, but refuses to explain the how or why. For as much as he coaxes out of others, he has surprisingly little to say about himself. On the off-chance that you manage to garner Jinnim's loyalty, he's ride or die for you for the rest of your life. It takes an act of spectacular evil to ward him away from any friendship he's invested in.
perroquadrado: (Default)
Character Name: Pasqua Solanáscea
Age: early 30s
Hometown: Erding, Urdania

Appearance:

A woman with a farmer’s build. A bit wide, a little barrel chested, and kind of buff on the arms and legs. She tends to wear a wide brim straw hat, leather gloves, leather boots, a handkerchief scarf, and cargo overalls with lots of pockets over a simple tunic. She also wears a utility belt where she keeps her most used field tools. She’s about 5’5”, has bronze skin, forest green hair with highlights, and green eyes. Less obvious are some minor cybernetic enhancements to accommodate for known occupational hazards such as lower back pain.

Story:

Specialties: Botany primarily, and any other realms of knowledge that touch it, to a lesser degree. Including but not limited to: alchemy, chemistry, geology, genetics, microbiology, biology, mycology, history, politics, and just enough tech to get herself into trouble.

Weaknesses:
Pasqua, like any other self-respecting scientist, considers her work crucial to society at large. Therefore, she is exceedingly careful about how she runs her professional and personal lives. While she enjoys socializing and highly values community, her time in Urdania has taught her it’s always best to have a cascade of backup plans. She’s reluctant to build relationships with anyone she feels she can’t tear down easily enough. Crowds and loud noise are really unpleasant too.

In a place like Urdania, where the availability of needs is limited and people can be quick to turn on each other, Pasqua is obsessed with planning for every eventuality. She's seen one too many communities slip and fall into oblivion because a couple of things just didn't work out. We weren't built to live this way. We need to support each other and act as a community, she believes. It's hard to do that though when your basic needs aren't getting met. She's always been good at single-mindedly keeping to a task for years on end, so she figured she'd put her mind to the second most important need of all: food (first being water).
Pasqua became a botanist to try and figure out how to make the most of the land. It's not just out of need, though. She has a big appreciation for food and drink. While she carefully guards her work, when a technique or discovery is ready to be shared, she's just as careful about getting the information out faster and farther than anyone can control it, in the hopes that the information won't be hoarded.
As a resident of Erding, she recognises the mountain spirits and respects their presence. However, the god she prays to, her guiding light, is Death. She fervently believes that to make discoveries regarding growth and life, she must understand death and decay. Besides, she doesn't like the idea of establishing a relationship with a god that has all the answers. The power imbalance. She'd always be in their debt, for any guidance, any answer. A god that can't help directly is hopefully more forthcoming. Especially one as reviled as Death.

Backstory

Terranova is a post-apocalyptic roleplay that takes place within the provinces of Urdania and Terranova, two city-states with tense relations.

Terranova is trying to recapture their past glory of the Information Age in the midst of an apocalyptic wasteland. They are cybernetic punks, wealthy technology moguls and enterprising opportunists.

Urdania lives in the present and within their means, even if it means sometimes going without. They are stout survivalists, stalwart spiritualists, and mischievous magic users.

They are split by the Chasm, which has unknown depths and terrors lurking inside.

So...which will you choose? Magic? Technology? Or...something darker?

Welcome to Terranova. )
All Terranovan towns are connected, via large power cables that extend miles, to Nova City. Some, like the Walwoods and Nuevo/Cinders, are very reliant on this energy; others, like Blackrock and Mesa, are more independent.

East and West Walwood
Eytan's hometown. East Walwood refers to "the Walwood (east of) Nova City" and West Walwood refers to "the Walwood (west of) Nova City" —though they are two different towns, they are both connected to Nova City and share the same name.

The Walwoods have the thickest ties to the Terranovan capitol, and a well-worn trade route has been established between them.

East Walwood's residents live in a clean and safe town; that is, because all the buildings are owned by the factory conglomerate Novacorp. Anyone who lives in East Walwood either works for Novacorp or is partnered to someone who works there. The currency in East Walwood is not the standard credits, but rather, NovaCash. Eytan's mother was pressured into a deal with Novacorp due to his father's outstanding debts, and she works tirelessly with little chance of ever leaving the town.

West Walwood is considered the "wrong side of the tracks," though its residents live in relative freedom from Novacorp. The city is especially infamous for its casinos and not-remotely-legal gambling establishments. Every night, there's a party in West Walwood. Behind the glitz and glamour, there are "interested parties" pulling the strings; gang bosses and their rivals, who struggle for power within the underbelly of the town.

Blackrock
Blackrock is the southern-most town of Terranova, situated at the edge of a desert. It started as a community of lean-to's, but slowly grew into a close-knit community. The residents of Blackrock are strong, independent survivalists who are accomplished mechanics and skilled electricians.

In the hands of a Blackrock resident, any tech can be repurposed and reused. There are no secrets between the townfolk; it is hard to maintain a sense of privacy with a population so small. Blackrock residents tend to be generous and kind—until they are double-crossed. Then that tech that so easily turns to life in their hands can and will be used for darker purposes.

Mesa
A town of hippie, clean energy-obsessed scientists living at the edge of the Chasm in Terranova. They built a complex pulley system that allows their scientists to pull up samples from the deep. From Mesa is where the rumors of an underground trading route through the Chasm started (mentioned in Terranova).

Unusual crystals have been found within the Chasm that have properties similar to solar panels. Mesan residents have successfully been able to power small homes with these crystals, but they remain tied to Nova City's power grid.

Mesa has a ritual called the Deep Walk. When someone in the community comes of age, they are forced to spend one night alone in the pitch black of the Chasm. Some don't survive; others come back physically or emotionally scarred. Recently, Mesan youth have started looking for alternatives to becoming part of the community; some going so far as to flee to Nova City if they cannot integrate.

Nuevo/Cinders
The town in which Hikaru and Isaiah stayed, and later, met Lyzea. Depending on who you ask, this town has two different names. Nuevo was a lively and bustling marketplace founded by cyborgs and robots on the outskirts of the thinnest part of the Chasm, where travelers would often cross to and from Terranova. Their relative peace came to an end when the humans burned the town to the ground and renamed it Cinders, as a promise of renewal and rebirth.

Nuevo/Cinders is a town constantly on the verge of conflict. The cyborgs and robots steal electricity to survive. Cinders is very reliant on Nova City's energy, and the more the cyborgs steal, the poorer its human residents get. Lyzea was the crafty leader of the cyborg rebellion. In her absence and the subsequent conflict, the cyborgs have become dispersed and disillusioned, but some still are hopeful that Nuevo can be reborn again.

Urdanian Towns

Urdanian towns, while not physically connected to the Parish, have some alignment with religion or spirituality. For instance, Erding is considered spiritually connected to the Parish; and Redmark as well by sheer proximity. Silverspring has its own religion, and Mesporte tends to eschew all religion, spirituality or otherwise.

Erding
A town targeted in the Urdanian bombings. Eytan saves Imalde's granddaughter and her cat in Erding. Erding is famous for its world-class apothecaries and herbalists. It is located in the foothills of the mountains, next to sulphur hot springs which are said to cure any ailment. They rely on the Parish for their commerce; they are far from Terranova and are generally suspicious of technology and electricity.

As it is close to the mountains, it is said some...strange sightings happen here. Some call it ghosts, others call it fey; but whatever it is, there are spirits that live on the mountain. The residents are mixed; some ascribe to the teachings of the Parish while others have begun to worship the spirits.

Redmark
A town targeted in the Urdanian bombings. Dominique first hears about it in the Parish. Famous for its anise liquor and whiskey distilleries, it has become a secret hideout for priests and nuns looking to blow off steam for a weekend.

Redmark is a town of wealthy farmers and whiskey makers who know more than most Urdanian towns about tech—their biggest buyers are Nova City and West Walwood, after all. Though tech is generally frowned upon in Urdania, some Redmark residents surreptitiously keep hobbies repairing old tech and long to see the other side of the Chasm.

Mesporte
Mesporte is a coastal town and is known for its fishing and beach tourism. Though the Parish has been trying to shut down the beach for its impropriety, vacationers and locals alike snubbed their nose at their Puritan policies. The ocean water rises constantly and Mesporte is always losing ground; it has been rebuilt multiple times.

Sometimes, people can find remnants of old houses and Terra Antiquan artifacts on the beach. Because of this, it is a famous spot for historians and anthropologists to uncover artifacts from the past.

Silverspring
Hikaru's hometown and a town of elves. The town is suspended over a quartz mine and has, for many years, provided Terranova and Urdania with crystals for technology and for amulets, respectively. They also have remained closed off to the rest of the world, preferring to do their business through human third parties to disguise their identities. It is rare for Terranovans or Urdanians to meet an elf; some doubt their very existence.

Silverspring strictly ascribes to a religion headed by the goddess Israh; she is the volcano at which they are situated below. Head coverings are required for all members of Silverspring, unless they are in the presence of a lover. They value family above all else and are suspicious of outsiders.
